Trick or Treat: Bats Night Out—Poem in Two Voices By Janie Reinart
Each person reads a column in this performance piece. Lines said at the same time are written on the same line in both columns. A blank space in the column—reader remains silent. (98 words)
On Halloween On Halloween
when bonfires gleam,
and the moon is masked
by clouds. by clouds.
We carefully creep We carefully creep
from places we sleep
under bridges, caves and trees.
Swooping, darting,
darting, swooping
in fluttering flight in fluttering flight
our skeleton fingers—
stretch webbed wings.
Ride serpentine streams… Ride serpentine streams…
streams…
streams…
searching for our prey.
Our tricks of echolocation
transforms us
into eating machines.
treating us to buggy
buggy
buggy cuisine. buggy cuisine.
A cauldron of bats. A cauldron
of bats.
Bats
Feasting
Feasting
Feasting on our night out. Feasting on our night out.
What a lyrical, creative, and delightful visit with Halloween tricks, treats, and bats! Good luck Janie 🙂
Thank you, Charlotte ❤️ You are the best cheer leader.
Love the nonfiction element in your poem. This is well done. Just love it!
Thank you, Pam ❤️ I love that the collective noun for bats is cauldron!
Excellent. I love this sort of poetry.
Chel thank you for your kind words.
I like the way it is written almost in a round. Like bats swirling and circling in the night sky. So lyrical. Nice job!
So glad you liked it Nancy❤️
This looks like a fun one to read out loud with a beginning reader!
